Are you at risk of falling?

Environmental factors for falls - Surroundings in your neighbourhood

Do you walk in places that are uneven, slippery, or icy?

If you answered Yes, here's what you can do:

  • Walk slowly and pay attention.
  • If the ground is full of snow, ice, leaves and water puddles, call your municipality and report it. Report the location of the hazard, the description, and indicate whether you or others have fallen because of the hazard.
  • Use your walking aid if one has been prescribed for you. See Handout 1 : A guide to preventing falls on how to determine if your cane is the right size for you.
If you walk for exercise or to get places, are there benches available on your route should you need to rest?

If you answered No, here's what you can do:

  • Find other individuals and groups who share your concern.
  • Bring your issue to the attention of local politician.
Do you lose your balance when getting on or off of buses?

If you answered Yes, here's what you can do:

  • Keep one hand free to hold onto the rail when getting on or off the bus.
  • If the driver stops too far from the curb, ask him or her to be more aware of the challenges that you and others may have in making the leap from the curb to the bus. If it continues, report it to the bus company.
  • If the driver starts to drive the bus before you are seated, ask him to wait until you are seated. If she or he does not wait, report it to the bus company.
  • Wait until the bus comes to a full stop before standing to get off the bus.
Have you noticed hazards in your neighborhood?

If you answered Yes, here's what you can do:

  • If these hazards are in an apartment building, store or restaurant, contact the building owner or manager.
  • If these hazards are in a shopping mall, contact the mall authorities.
  • If these hazards are on city streets, call your municipal or city switchboard and they will put your through to the appropriate authorities to take the information.
  • Complete the Walkability checklist to identify safe places to walk in your neighborhood.
